    I have mixed feelings about mailing lists, but consider:

    They're offline-first, batched, inherently efficient with bandwidth. The "offline" property was crucial to many of our stakeholders in the recent past, who would often use their time on commercial flights to catch up on email, which was batched until uplink restored.

    There are many, many clients and workflows.

    I have plenty of spam in my mailbox

    A tragedy of the least-common-denominator of push messaging. Begin by making sure you're part of the solution, and not part of the problem. That means you probably shouldn't be using email for any routine alerting.
