Just to advise that the problem has been solved.
I received a recommendation to download WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics. When I ran this, it recognized my target drive, and I was able to run Erase from within the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics suite of programs. This did the trick, and after that the drive was recognized by winmfs, and I was able to run mfscopy successfully.
