Tivo Serial PPP won't connect

Ok serial bash works fine, I can login and yadda yadda all fine in serial bash mode. When the networking is set to serial ppp, and the connection setup on winxp, no incoming connection is detected. If I open up hyperterm and power up the tivo all I get is garbled rubbish and it just goes on and on doesnt stop, there is no user request or anything like that after 5 lines or whatever. I have tried both 57600 and 115200 speeds. Serial cable seems fine since it works in bash mode and also the loop back test works fine. Any ideas? May have to get a network card for the Tivo but be nice if I didnt need to spend the extra money since I have a spare comp laying around I could use. Any help appreciated
