    Hard Drive does not spin

I'm new to TiVo Bought a Phillips series one machine from Trade Me. It has a 120 gig drive. The drive goes fine in my PC so was able to put the latest image (May) on the drive. When reinstalled in the TiVo set to Master the drive does not spin up. TiVo displays a splash screen - No OzTivo logo - just TiVo loga and some message about starting up which does not go away.

Drive is plugged in to the IDE cable, tried both power leads. Ideas please.

I'm thinking Power supply problems with 12 volt??

Hi Don, welcome to the OzTiVo Forums and sorry to hear you have had a bumpy start.

You could have a power supply problem, a faulty IDE cable (or one plugged in the wrong way maybe?) or a fault in the IDE controller on the TiVo motherboard.

The first thing you can do if you have access to a multimeter (voltmeter) is measure what voltage you are getting on the yellow (12V) and red (5V) wires when measured between either one of them to either the metal case of the TiVo or the black power wire. If you have anything +/- 10% tolerance then you have a problem. Also check that the other end of the hard disk power harness is actually plugged in properly to the power supply. Sometimes a wiggle here will reveal a bad connection or a plug not seated right.

If you do suspect the power supply I can exchange yours for another or even loan you a power supply.

TiVo displays a splash screen - No OzTivo logo - just TiVo loga and some message about starting up which does not go away.
That's correct. That screen is actually in the PROM chip on the circuit board. It does not go away until the hard disk starts booting the TiVo which of course is not happening for you.

    Fixed it

Thanks all for your advice. I feel stupid. The HDD power cable was not plugged in to the Power Supply.

Oh well learning all the time.

    Ahhhh.... see? Easy fix

    I feel stupid.
Nah. I wouldn't. You should have witnessed some of the things a so-called "Soldering Legend" like myself has done but dares not mention that has kept me guessing for hours
