Please help me with serial link

I hope someone can help me, I have installed the tivo software on to the drive and pluged it into the TV, it works ! it takes me through the setup screens. Now i have the serial cable and have pluged it into my computer, what program do i use to talk to the tivo? and can some please tell me how to do it. i have tried HyperTerm and i am not getting anywhere. It does not want to talk to the tivo, all i get is a blank terminal window with nothing in it, if i type anything it displays on the screen but thats it.. PLEASE HELP
