    Serious "groaning" noise

I have had my Tivo for almost one year, this morning it was making a terrible very loud groaning noise, it almost sounded like an old VCR rewinding but only really loudly and the whole box was vibrating.
Getting any info out of tivo.com.au is useless i've emailed them about the issue about a month ago and have had no reply.

This noise comes about around every 4-6 weeks in the last 4 months but this week it has happened twice. THe tivo still works as normal.

Anyone know what is going on?

Well, there's two mechanical parts in a TiVo:

    1. The hard disk, and
    2. The rear cooling fan

Next time it happens see if you can narrow it down by listening close. The fan don't spin at a huge rate of knots so a simplistic test if you don't/can't pull the cover off would be to insert a drinking straw through the rear panel fan cutouts to temporarily stall it. If that stops the noise then there's your problem.
