In the end I'm not sure what fixed it, but I used the older PC after fixing a power problem (thanks Dave), and the older one worked (thanks Pete) with a new and sumchecked image (thanks Skolink).
I've managed the networking ok and now it's indexing! Thank you everyone. You've been very generous. Paula.
