Possibly an over restrictive firewall or something screwy in the router. This is possibly why the CD updater don't work. Very strange that even a trace command fails but then again if someone has enabled a "belts and braces" restriction somewhere then anything is possible.

Sam: Temporarily disable any firewalls and port restriction settings on both your PC and the router and try again.

    Hi,
yep - thats what I orriginally thought was the problem waaay back when I first couldn't get the Tivo to call home. I thought I did remove all firewalls and blocks on the router/PC, but with my lack of knowledge - probably didn't. Does anyone have a basic guide as to how to do this? I understand I will have to log onto my router via its web based interface and turn them all off there, but how do I do the other parts? Plus should I be doing this on my router or my modem? Thanks,
    Sam

It's strange. For GS the TiVo only need port 80 and port 37 open. At this stage it is port 80 we are concerned with. Port 80 is the standard port used for http (web surfing) so this port is never closed on any browser.

    Are you running XP w/SP2?

Can try this from your TiVo, not sure it will prove a proxy though.

    traceroute -p 80 ftp.monash.edu.au
    traceroute -p 21 ftp.monash.edu.au

    And post the results here.

    Hi Guys,
just wondering if you know the address that the Tivo is trying to FTP to? Im wondering if I will be able to test the connection by ftp'ing or even just pinging it from my pc? Thanks,

That info is already available in the "networking" self-help area of the OzTiVo website under "ping" and "wget" here:

TiVo does not use FTP for it's calls.

Did you try the traceroute commands I asked you to in post #106?
