Couple more things to try one at a time:
1. Check that all leads are plugged in fully. Pay special attention to the hard disk power cable plug at the power supply end.
2. Unplug the network cable.
3. Unplug the network card.
If the freezing continues then your last resort is to try another hard drive. Even though you have tried mfscheck and maybe (you do not say) the one you are using is brand new this is no guarantee there are no issues with it. Any hard disk from 6GB and up will do as a test.
If you still experience problems then it is a hardware related fault which will need attention.
