    Memory upgrade

    Hi,

has anyone here installed the memory upgrade that used to be available from 9th tee? http://www.9thtee.com/tivomemory.htm ?
I bought one of these years ago and installed it, but it never worked (bad soldering on my part I expect)

I'm thinking of trying to re-solder it again, but I'm wondering if the benefits are worth the risk of breaking my TiVo.

Does anyone have any experience of a S1 TiVo with 32MB? Is it any better?

    Matt

This is one of the first things I did with my very first TiVo, which is still chugging away 4 years later in the loungeroom.

In short, no it does not do anything that I can see. Some software guys may know if it takes a bit of load off the CPU and/or disk swapping for applications but I'm not that way inclined.

As far as I know it was believed to help in the same way a cachecard is claimed to do but has since been dismissed.

    Thanks for the reply.
The main issue I see is that when I log into the tivo via telnet, the picture freezes for a few seconds. I also see the problem when starting a new program from the command line (e.g. tivosh). I would *hope* that more memory would make a difference here, but maybe it's not worth the risk...

You should 1st make sure you are swapping enabled. That is usually the source of this sort of problems.
If you run top, it'll show you what you swap file is set to.

    I have swap enabled:
    Code:
    [TiVo [p1] ~]# cat /proc/meminfo
total: used: free: shared: buffers: cached:
    Mem: 14143488 13983744 159744 121647104 155648 4341760
    Swap: 133165056 9555968 123609088
    MemTotal: 13812 kB
    MemFree: 156 kB
    MemShared: 118796 kB
    Buffers: 152 kB
    Cached: 4240 kB
    SwapTotal: 130044 kB
    SwapFree: 120712 kB
I would have thought the problem was caused by the TiVo paging to swap when I log in (as it needs more memory to run bash)

It's not a big issue, as it only effect what you are watching. It does not effect recordings.

Yeah, I've never noticed a problem with recorded stuff. It's just my wife complains if she's watching live TV!
Based on Darren's post, I think I'll leave the memory upgrade in it's current un-working state, unless I get really adventurous

That said, I don't have any machines with both banks filled. So I have never tried and side by side tests.
