After reinstalling the software (due to a hard drive failure) the Tivo has now started to record shows without programming. In a given day, it will record 4-5 shows without any assistance.
It would be great it the Tivo could read my mind and record the shows I was interested in. But infortunately, it has much different tastes (such Banana in Pajamas).
Has anyone else encountered similar problems?

Good to hear that after a gentle push they replaced the drive.
Your TiVo is recording things on it's own accord because of a suggestion feature it has. This is worked out by the TiVo thinking it knows what you might like based on other recordings you have made and at first it can appear to be way off the mark which is what your thumbs up and thumbs down buttons are used for in giving the TiVo an indication of what you like and dislike. You will see the suggested recordings have a different icon in your "now showing" list and these are deleted first as hard disk space is needed. You can turn this feature off in your preferences.
It is definitely NOT a bug or "problem"
That would explain why I couldn't find info on the issue in the mailing list.
