built in modem and Dodo Internet

Hi again,

I'm setting up a philips tivo with the latest oztivo software to work with dodo internet. I've got it dialing up and it seems to be logging in to dodo but I can't get a connection to the EPG server :confused:.

Could someone please talk me through debugging this issue? I've carefully followed the advice in "NetworkingWithBuiltinModem" and I've configured my "tclient.conf" correctly.

Unfortunately, the tivo box has no turbonet card or similar, and in any case it's in too difficult a spot to get to with ethernet. Wi-fi is a possibility but it would take a lot of time, effort, and money to upgrade in this way.

Hopefully someone out there is using dodo and the built in modem.

If any of you out there are using dial-up to get their EPG via the tivo internal modem, could you please post a reply as I've a feeling I may need to buy a dial up connection with another ISP to get this working.

What I need to know is which ISP's are currently working properly via the tivo modem.

Have you set your tclient.conf to use the new server 65.49.60.197 and Port 9090?

Take a look at the tclient log (/var/log/tclient), it should give some indication as to what is going wrong. If you are unsure where the problem is, zip it and attach it here.

Yes I had already edited tclient.conf (using "joe") to point to the new server.
The tivo is stuck with the first call home. It connects to dodo but then I get a service unavailable error.

Do I need a different dial up ISP? I'm using the internal modem and looking in the faq, dodo was listed as one of the problem isp's. I also used putty to dial in to dodo manually and from the response, I can see it's using chap authentication.

I really don't mind paying a few dollars for a prepaid dial up ISP if this will solve the problem.

I'll have a look at the log file. However I don't know how to extract it across the serial link. Sorry for being a complete dunce. I vaguely remember something about xmodem and zmodem but can't remember how to implement this. :o

I have had the same problem with two TiVos I have just set up in the last 2 days. The installer menu seems to set the emulator port in /etc/oztivo.conf to 909000 rather than 8000 that I enter after imaging the disk (using the boot CD with the HDD in the computer).
I updated the installer menu automatically both times and I see there is a new version. I guess that is likely the problem since it was probably modified to help Australian users use the new emulator on port 9090.
The boot disk is my trusty OzTivo Sony 1.6.2 which until now has not displayed that problem

When is gets stuck in the guided setup I telnet in and use joe to edit /etc/oztivo.conf , reboot, and then GS works fine.

Hmm.

I had already set tclient.conf up to use the new epg on port 9090. I haven't looked at the oztivo.conf file but I will do so. Presumably both files need to be set to 65.49.60.197:9090? Hope so because looking at your above post that seems to be what you're implying I should do?

PS. Incidentally, mine is a new install like yours. When I booted from the iso image on the cd and configured the tivo for internal modem and the www.oztivo.net emulator from the menu, this didn't result in the correct ip address arriving in the tclient.conf file. Where the oztivo address should appear in the line, it seemed to be set to localhost, as per turbonet configuration. So the first thing I did was to change this "default" IP to port 9090 on the new server. The install menu did however manage to bring the correct dial up telephone number into tclient.conf. Not much use if we're trying to get through to localhost rather than the EPG though, eh?!!! :-]

This was the oztivo.conf file following the install from cd

Have you tried dialling the access number from a 'phone? I've tried it and it seems to be busy.
Do dodo have any other dialup numbers?

Judging by how short it is, and the old timestamp, I'm guessing that you are only seeing the first few lines of that file, not the entire thing (which is why it doesn't seem to change when you force another call). If you run the command "tail /var/log/tclient" it should return the last few lines of the file. If they are different, you'll need to find a way of posting the rest of the file here

No, as catdog has said you are only showing the top of the tclient file, not the whole thing, not even the most recent attempt.

Clear the log first:

cat /dev/null > /var/log/tclient

Then force a call, then copy the whole log.

I cleared /var/log tcliet and then went back through guided setup. I can't remember whether I explained that I'm still trying to set this tivo up for the first time. Anyway, I get to the first setup call and make the call from there. Then I've copied the resulting tclient log file below. This is only the end of the file by the look of it. I copied this using the joe text editor.

Can you please advise me how to copy the tclient log file across the serial link from the tivo to my windows pc? Do I need to use xmodem, zmodem or something? Failing that, is there another editor on the tivo disc which I can copy text from?

Unfortunately, I don't have a turbonet card so I can't get into the tivo box over the network, I'm stuck with the serial link.

I've been looking on the tivoZA site and someone had a similar error which if I'm right seems to have been fixed by fiddling with the DNS settings or something.

Not sure why DNS would be needed when the tivo calls the IP address direct though!!

Based on that, you may want to try modifying /etc/resolv.conf to use your ISP's DNS server.

We currently use nameserver 61.88.88.88, so change the IP to your ISP's primary DNS

Hi Pete.

I connected to dodo dial up using my pc, to get their dial up DNS server address. I thought it might also be a good idea to open a browser and see that the connection is working OK and, of course, it aint. Dodo is directing me to a static page saying my login is incorrect (which it isn't). I've emailed them about this and I suppose I will have to wait and see what they say. I normally use dodo ADSL and dodo did tell me that the dial up username/password is the same... but that doesn't seem to change the fact that it ain't working!

I've asked dodo to reset my adsl and dial up passwords and let me know...

I've had dealings with dodo tech support before, and I won't hold my breath waiting for them to sort this out.

So in the meantime I will get a telstra prepaid dial up and try with that. The tivo will only make one call a day so I don't really mind paying a few dollars to telstra while dodo get onto things.

I'll let you know how I get on..

I got a reply from dodo and they don't allow concurrent connections on adsl as well as dial up. That was the problem. So I got a cheapo pay as you go telstra dial up.

Telstra works just fine. I get my first call home no probs, and continue with setup until I try to get the ir blaster working....

The only problem now is that the ir blaster won't operate my "austar flinders" STB. I have tried both the oztivo austar control codes, and all the foxtel ones, and they don't work. I've checked that the IR blaster is working (by using camcorder), so I think it may be a code issue. :confused:

Should I start a new thread with this issue? Should I use the mailing list?

There is at least one Austar box that we do not have codes for.

Someone sent me a remote, and the codes I captured for them did not work either.

I have just found it, the codes we didn't get working was for an Austar ADB G3.

So, I suggest maybe you post a message onto onto the mailing list and ask if anyone is using the same box as you have, and what code and speed they are using.

The final option would be to capture your own codes.

This is still flawed, but the easiest.

Like I said I tried for the G3 and was unsuccessful, but have done plenty of other STB's ok.

Worse comes to worse you may want to ask Austar for the same box you used to have because you cannot reprogram your theatre system to use it.

One slight problem is that I'm serial port only. I don't have a network connection to the tivo. So I'm not able to FTP things to the box and I'll need help with methods of getting stuff onto and off the tivo across the serial link. I vaguely remember the words xmodem and zmodem. Is this the way to move stuff across the serial link?

Do Austar help with things like home theatre incompatability? Have they replaced boxes for this reason before, Pete?

I will call them anyway, and ask politely. I've not given austar much bother over the years so hopefully they will smile on me now! :)

Are you using Dial-up or PPP over serial for your guide data.

I Know Foxtel and SKY in NZ have swapped boxes before, but you probably shouldn't mention TiVo, just for other gear.

Since you old box died, I think it's a fair request.

Come to think of it, I really don't know what to say to austar. I'm not aware of anything other than the tivo, for which I would need the box changing. I can't think of any other obvious incompatibilities.

Sorry, but I'm not sure what you're driving at when you ask about dial up versus ppp. I am using telstra dial up via the built in modem for guide data, but when I dial in to telstra using a terminal emulator, from my PC, to check the connection, it indicates that it's connecting via PPP. So I suppose it's both! However I am NOT using the serial port for guide data, it's going via the modem port. It may also be important to advise you that my telstra dial up account is server assigned IP. So it's not easy to work out the IP address of my tivo and log in to it via my adsl connection. Hopefully you have something more elegant in mind!

Ok, you use dial up, which defeats my idea.

You should be able to send from your pc through a serial cable using hyperterminal.

On the TiVo type rz to receive the file.

This is all from memory. It has been a very long time since I had to use zmodem. If you get stuck try Google.

I figured it may be easier to take the HD out of the tivo and put the software onto it using my windows system, but of course XP doesn't recognise the file system. So I had a play with zmodem and got that working with my desktop pc.

However I need to play with the tivo while it's installed in my theatre system. So I've purchased a USB to serial adaptor for my laptop. I know these can be a bit crappy so I'll see how I get on.

I've also been playing with zmodem on the desktop-tivo setup. It's great fun! I've not done much from a command line for years and it's all coming back to me! I've moved files both ways so in principle I've found a solution, with your help of course!

I've got the necessary IR files onto the tivo and am gradually working my way through your suggested course of action. Next step is to install the usb to serial adapter on the laptop then move the tivo back into the living room.....

I wish you hadn't done that, as XP can overwrite the boot sectors on the TiVo...

If you haven't already, please put the drive back in and test that the TiVo is still ok.

Assuming the TiVo is ok, there is no need to move the TiVo to the Living room, all you need is the Austar Remote and the TiVo hooked up to a PC. So you can capture the code near your PC, if that's easier for you.

Pete. I was very careful with the tivo HD, and no, I didn't overwrite the MBR. Thanks for the warning though! Well, I'm taking the tivo into the living room because one of the things I need to do with slicecreator is to check that the imported codes, transmitted by the tivo, are able to operate the STB. Then I'll follow the bit about updating the new source record file with the tcl file.

One problem I'm going to hit though Pete (and yes I'll need help here too :o ), is that the method you've recommended asks me to use tivoweb to obtain arguments for the dbsetx command. If you know of a way to get this data over the serial port I'd be very grateful.

I'm finding out, the hard way, why everyone is using a turbonet card! Unfortumately, there's not much chance of my reaching the tivo in the living room with ethernet so what I will probably end up doing is connecting the tivo to a dedicated wireless bridge via the card I'm getting from Pete. Then any further adjustments can be made over the wireless network using tivoweb or telnet. This'll mean a few more cables behind the home theatre system but, hey! what's another spoonful of spaghetti between friends? ;)

Booting into XP or XP SP1 will usually corrupt the TiVo drive. I believe later version are ok.

Below I have shown how to find your source ID without TiVoWeb.

Thanks for that. I'm now really starting to get familiar with BASH!

I'm having some problems with irSliceCreator though. It keeps freezing when I try to test the captured remote codes. I'm also getting the error "no tivo IR code header" when I test some of the codes using slice creator, via the ir blaster. Although I've managed to capture some codes, I've not yet got a single one to work via the ir blaster. Plus, each time I restart slice creator, I'm having to hunt down and kill IR processes first, or else it freezes with the first command I enter into it. It runs nicely the very first time after the tivo boots but each time I restart the program I'm obliged to clear up the mess it leaves behind when it closes. It seems like work in progress rather than a fully fledged program. It's very fiddly and it will take some time, but I think I will eventually get there. Definitely better than nothing. Well, probably slightly better than nothing!:rolleyes:

Oh, incidentally. I contacted austar and they've stopped supplying the atlas boxes and anyone wanting a new or replacement STB will be stuck with these horrible new "flinders" (=altech) boxes which seem, to me, very cheap and nasty. irSliceCreator is very much an alpha program, the person who wrote it lost interest in TiVo and never finished it. It's frustrating to use, but usually works for most remotes.

The code sending to test does not work 100%. It might be worth asking Austar if they can tell you the frequency for the remote to narrow down the options.

No real solutions.

There are even more complex methods of capture if you want to give it a go, here.

Also one person responded to you email to list and said they also used the same box and couldn't find any codes to work.

Gets them every time. I think it might be best to just capture all the codes and install the data to see if it works. Certainly it's a problem testing individual captured codes before processing.

It's what I would describe as a bit frustrating, but fun, and a challenge. Imagine the esteem in which I will be held if I succeed :)!

So, I will clear all the captured codes I have and start again from a clean directory, capture all 10 codes then process them and see how I go.

Failing that I will have a go at the "rewrite war and peace" alternative method!

Hi there

I think part of my problem with this is that the myworld software is screwing up my ir code capture.

I've tried killing the process e.g. doing a ps auxwf followed by kill (x) were x= the process id of myworldp. I've also tried doing /tvbin/switcherstart -k after booting but the when I do this method, the bash prompt hangs.

Please remember, in all of this, that I've never actually got as far as completing a guided setup.

Any further suggestions?

I don't think that's an issue, but to check just select any box and completed GS. The TiVo doesn't know that the channel change didn't work. You can easily change codes later assuming you have some to try.

I completed guided setup and have the tivo working nicely apart from no IR codes.

I contacted austar and they won't send me an atlas box or any other box than the flinders. I've posted a message at "remote central" to see if anyone else has the codes.

Since I completed guided setup I get "connection refused" messages when I try to capture codes usine irslicecreator. I've killed just about every process but I still can't connect to the ir port on the tivo. Do I need to put the tivo into maintenance mode? If so I don't know how to access that.

Before I completed guided setup I captured a heap of codes using clicecreator and processed them to try and make a tcl file. The codes looked good and fairly reproducible. However, I tried tridge's method of manually testing individual codes and when I send them to ttyS0 I get an error message that the code length is not long enough to make the minimal pulse size.

Hence I've uploaded my files for you to look at.

Not sure what to do next.

You don't need maintenance mode to capture codes.

I haven't used tridges method, but have found most ways of testing individual codes to be flaky and rarely work.

I have had much better results just loading the entire tcl

Looking through your files, they seem to be formatted correctly, but obviously don't know if the codes are any good.
