Manual record and disabling 30 min blcoks

Hi,

I'm using my Tivo without guide data and its basically a super dooper VCR. When I try to record shows the Tivo stops recording after 30mins. This can be annoying when I want to record a show or movie that I see has just started and goes longer than 30mins. Is there any way that I can set up the Tivo to record until I stop it manually? I've found hitting record again gives me the option to stop it, but I don't want my non guide data Tivo making decisions for me.
I know about the manual record feature in the options menu but its more for planned recordings as I understand it, rather than on the spot, "Wow a Van Damme movie, can't miss this!"

Unfortnately that is just how the "record" button defaults if there is no valid guide data.

But don't despair: In the time it takes you to say "wow a Van Damme movie" you can still use the manual record option from the menu as your TiVo is already recording the program in the 30 minute live buffer, so if you use the trick of just setting the start time to before the current time then it will also add in the stuff it already has in the 30 minute live buffer for that channel (or part thereof if you changed channels and do not have a full 30 minutes worth).
