View Full Version : Can't establish a serial connection

My next problem is establishing a serial connection.

I get the bash prompt on my PC but there is no response when typing commands. Also pressing enter does not replicate the prompt. Get it once only.

Using my laptop with a USB to serial connector I get a scrolling screen full of characters with the prompt and bash in their at times.

Set Hypertem to the settings recommended 9600,8,n,1,hardware.

Any ideas?

Don

This is an issue I used to see all the time when I used serial on a semi-permanent basis (now I use my network card and a telnet program called PuTTY instead).

Anyway, try this: Reboot the TiVo and let it boot up to the main menu (TiVo central). DO NOT go into watching live TV. Leave it on the main menu.

Then see if you get response. If not try going up to 19200 baud and type some characters. If you get a clear response then continue at 19200 but if you get garbled text drop back to 9600 and see what happens.

Set Hypertem to the settings recommended 9600,8,n,1,hardware.

Where did you see those settings recommended ? We need to have them corrected.

You need to set flow control 'off', not 'Hardware' as there is no cabling for flow control in the 3 wire cable used to connect to the TiVo.

Also make sure you have Emulation set to "VT100" and have selected "Echo typed characters locally".

Peter.

Thanks for the help and suggestions. taking off hardware control, setting terminal type to VT100 and turning off local echo got me going.

Now on to the next problem adding my sky channels using the script add-all-sky-channels.dat
This returns messages like:
station CONCERT
channel 102
The file id you will need to use add-channel is 2389/10

Now what is going on here? Have I added the channels or not?

Cheers

Hi Don

Glad to hear you got it going and apologies for my "brain fart" as I totally missed the bit about you setting up for hardware flow control :(

As for your next problem I might suggest you ask that in a new thread in the NZ area just in case the people that can help you are not looking in this area. You might get a quicker response by doing this.

Cheers

when using the add-all-sky-channels script, did you append your av source ID onto the end of the command?
EG:
./add-all-Sky-Channels 456765/13

As a side note, why don't you just use the NZ emulator to setup the TiVo. It would be much easier.

Peter.

Yes I guess I should have used the NZ Emulator. Problem is I did not know it existed. Where do I go to download?

Would like to find the NZ specific scripts. Cannot find them anywhere nor the emulator. Darn

I'm not sure what you mean.

If you follow the instructions on the link I gave you, you just run through Guided setup, enter 02113 for Sky Digital in the zip code and everything is setup automatically for you.

Peter.
