Hi all, while trying to find my answer in my first post on here I found a story posted on a blog called SpitTech http://www.spittech.com/2009/08/25/tivo-support-site-spits/

As the first reply says - and I have suggested - the TiVo must get the software update for the extra features to work. Like all things with software there are new releases after the unit is boxed up at the factory so until the day they work out how to magically power up electronic devices and get software updates while sitting idle in a store it unfortunately needs a little consumer participation.

Just to add to what Darren said, user participation is not even required. The upgrades will automatically happen over the first few days without you needing to do anything.

But if you are impatient you can force them to happen quicker as explained in the other thread.
