Hi guys,
Im a new tivo user and I cant get my unit to make the first phone home successfully...
I have the IP, subnet and default gateway set correctly (well I believe so anyway) and can ping the tivo with no problems from my PC.
Its a phillips series one with the latest image installed on it, 300gb hard drive, turbo net card, I have it connected directly to my router which connects to my adsl modem.
When trying to do the setup for the first time it seems happy enough until it tries to do the first phone home where it gets stuck on the first step and eventually times out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated - I'm really keen to get my tivo going!Thanks guys,

Telnet onto your TiVo and check that it can ping the default gateway, then ping the oztivo or nztivo server. Are you sure you set it to use Turbonet and not dialup during setup?

Hi,
yes I did set it up to use the turbobnet and not the dial up approach, although it still says "Dialing" and some other comments when it is trying to make the "phone home" however I presume this has just carried over from its orriginal phone line lingo.
Ok, I have downloaded "Putty" can anyone give me basic instructions on how to ping the default gateway from the tivo? Sorry if its really basic, I'm still learning!!! If it can ping the gateway, what does that suggest and if it can't ping the gateway - I take it that means its (the gateway settings) setup incorrectly?

If you have any issues using putty, just use "telnet TIVOADDRESS 23" from the command line.
Here are some useful commands:
route
You should get something like this: where the default line has your router's ip address.

This gets the file index.html on the http port (the port used by the daily call)
If this one doesn't work it could be a proxy issue.

ok no problem - sounds easy enough. I will try this tonight and post up my results to see what you guys think.

Your networking setup looks fine,
Traceroute looks good, having some stars in the middle is OK, it just mean that router blocks some ICMP, but normal traffic's ok.
You can connect to port 80 OK you can probably connect to port 8000 OK as well, you mistyped the address. It's 48 not 28. :)

Are you is NZ or AUS?
NZ's on port 8000, AUS on port 80.
Sound like you might have an issue with your proxyemu setup as you networking looks good.

**EDIT** If I can't get this to work, is connecting the tivo up to my pc's network card (which works fine communicating to the outside workd via its wireless connection to the router) a viable solution? Or will it face the same problem? Ultimately I just want to get my new toy working!!!

Doubtful. If anything the wired connection from the TiVo to the router would be the simplest of the lot to get working. Personally (and I've had countless TiVo's through my hands in for repairs and/or modifications) I've never had a connection problem with the direct TiVo to router method so I can't see why it would not be working for you too.

Hmm,
interesting (and long!) read. So you think it may be my ISP that is blocking minnie? I take it that was the end result from that thread? Or was it a combination of that and all the other things they did? My ISP is exetel - anyone else running through them? If I call them up, what should I ask? Thanks guys, really appreciate it.

Exetel Doesn't use blocking proxies in WA, unsure about VIC. \
They did just recently install new major new hardware for backend ADSL2+ support in VIC & NSW though.
Can you post the contents of your /etc/oztivo.conf file.

Do you know how to use a telnet program like putty?
If so open your TiVo's address and type cat /etc/oztivo.conf
Then copy and paste the results here.
If your not familiar with telnet then look here (http://minnie.tuhs.org/twiki/bin/view/Howto/TelnetToYourTiVo).

Wibble, since v1.6 of the OzTiVo image rc.sysinit.author is no longer edited. We use a config file instead. The default is /etc/dflt_sysinit.conf or if modified /etc/sysinit.conf
sparker, can you try the following:
grep -i emuproxy /etc/sysinit.conf
grep -i emuproxy /etc/dflt_sysinit.conf
cat /hack/etc/emuProxyZA.conf
The first one probably won't work, thats ok.

I didn't expect the first file to exist, but a little supprised the 2nd one doesn't exist.
I have attached it here. Unzip then ftp the file to /hack/etc and reboot.

Next step would be to talk to someone at Exetel and ask them what is the address of the web proxy used on your service, or alternatively ask them to exclude 131.244.9.101 from the proxy service as it is blocking your TiVo.
It may take some demanding to be pushed up the customer service tree to get to someone who understands what you are asking.
Also can you confirm, you still have not completed setup.

The proxy address may relate directly to your service (or at least different between different states and different adsl, adsl2 pops). As I said there are no issues with Exetel here. The account holder needs to call with their username and password so they can trace where your line runs.

you need to ask what I said in the first paragraph of post #34. The best option is to exclude that IP address from any of their proxies, failing that ask what is the address and port number of the web proxy used on your service.

check out this thread on the exetel forum - could it be the problem? I don't understand what they are talking about - but someone there had a problem with their tivo and then did something to fix it. Anyone understand what they are saying?

From the infomation on the exetel forum you could try the following:
cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_no_pmtu_disc
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_no_pmtu_disc
cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_no_pmtu_disc
The 1st line should give a result of 0
The 2nd line give no result
The 3rd line should give a result of 1
Now type reboot to reboot the tivo and see if it works.

Unfortunately it was no good. Well, I should say that the lines you gave me gave the exact results you predicted, however it still didn't allow me to complete the first setup call... Bugger!
Got a reply from Exetel support, here it is:
Hello, thank you for your email.
Exetel do not use a proxy for connections at all.
Nor are ports blocked. I would suggest that you check your
individual computer and / or firewall to resolve the issue.
If you believe this is trace problem please perform a trace
route to the IP address(es) and reply back to me.

The command
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_no_pmtu_disc
will not have worked as changes to /proc will be lost on reboot.
So you will need to add the following line to the end of your /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.author
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_no_pmtu_disc
Then reboot and try again.

Mine actually returns the file on the screen ( Bless you Vista for making things non-standard as usual ). So, may I suggest trying Firefox as a browser to do the trick.
If it does put the text on the screen, just copy and paste that into a txt file and then upload that.

Works on IE6 for me.
The other alternative would be to use an FTP program like smartftp to copy the file from the TiVo to your PC.

Downloaded firefox, looks more promising (as in it doesn't crash) - but still no file... It just sits there with the logo in the top corner spinning. How long should it take?

Use an FTP program as has been suggested in previous replies by other's. Personally I use FlashFXP but there's tons of FTP applications out there.

Hmm, downloaded flashfxp. It says that it connects to my tivo's address, but its not bring up any files in its window. Then eventually it says connection failed.
Do I have to connect on a particular port? Or put in a username at all?
This must suggest something up the creek with my tivo's setup???

In that case it's down to four things:
1. Software network setup issue (ie settings in nic_config_tivo)
2. Faulty TiVo network card
3. Faulty network cabling (most common problem by far)
4. Faulty port in the router

Finally managed to connect to it - I just had to pull the power on my tivo as it seemed to have crashed? I did also swap ports on the router though? None the less, attached is the zipped file in question. Let me know what you guys think! Thanks again,

your problem is this:

So, something is definately blocking the calls. What we don't know is if it's your router or the ISP.
Try this (http://www.lagado.com/proxy-test) link from your PC, it's not reliable but may help.
If it shows no proxy then try this (http://www.lagado.com/tools/cache-test) from your PC.
also on your tivo try:
wget http://131.244.9.101/tivo-service/mlog.cgi
cat mlog.cgi
You should get 'Done.' as the response to the 2nd line.
Then try:
wget http://www.lagado.com/proxy-test
cat proxy-test
Scoll down the list till you see <p class="testresult"> then look at the next line and see if it says there is a proxy.
Now just to clean up a little:
rm proxy-test
rm mlog.cgi
To delete those files.

Ok - first link from PC said "This request appears NOT to have come via a proxy.

For the second test, my page serial number was updating.

Unfortunately it doesn't really prove anything, except the dns resolution didn't work for the last test which can happen occasionally. I suggest you try the last test a few more times.
Remind me, are you running the UK image or Philips.

Also I might suggest re-imaging and make sure you select update the installer before imaging the drive.

When I select "Update from the installer cd - will I need to have access to the internet? How does it update? I only ask as my main pc uses SATA drives, so I have to do the imaging on my spare pc (with ide drives) which is not connected to the internet. Will this still allow me to do the update? I'm sorta guessing not due to the lack of operating system, but then Im not sure as to how it updates? Thanks,

You will need to pull the drive and attach it the same as you originally did, but the machine you attach it to needs to have an internet connection to download the updated installer files. It's alway's advisable not to install the TiVo in a difficult location till you have it running stable.

that's not a bad idea - I should take it over to a friends house to see if it works with their network/ISP provider. I bought the unit off ebay and would trust that it works from the previous owner. Besides, I tried it out before installing the image and it appeared to be working fine and had saved programs installed on the drive.
In regards to having internet access on the machine that you install the iso from, does the loader program look for this connection through a network connection or something? IE, can I hook a network cable up to my spare pc (that I do the is iso loadings from) and this will work? I guess I can try it and see what it says.
Oh, and my tivo isn't in a particularly bad position, anywhere is hard to get to with a freshly dislocated shoulder!!!
Thanks for your help, may get a chance to try the fresh update/install tonight.

Just a quick question guys, will it be obvious if the update does or does not work? I have tried it and it just flashes something very quickly on a black background screen and then shows the same screen again. Does this mean it downloaded the latest update or not? If not, why not? I presume a network setting is not correct, but how do I set it? Thanks,

Unless Peter can put me wise I don't see what all the fuss is about regarding having to update the installer CD when imaging the hard disk. I would have thought an alternative route would be to use the 1.6.2 CD as is and then invoke the update_oztivo -y command to get the updates when the hard disk is put back in the TiVo.
Surely not everyone has or is expected to have a PC connected to a network when imaging a TiVo hard disk?

The only thing you will notice is version number of the installer will increment. From memory 1.22 to 1.23 or 1.23 to 1.24. The ISO should auto configure on the PC it is run on, so yes just plugging a network cable in should work.
Darren,
Apart from the menu fixes it also downloads some file updates and config changes since the ISO was released. This includes changes to emuproxyZA which may fix the problem.
If you don't pick up the changes at install you can get them by rsync later, the problem is for rsync to be sucessful you must have completed GS. This is where sam is stuck, rsync won't work as he can't complete GS.

Sorry Sam I rarely get further into Melbourne than Dandenong. Although I guess another idea may be to send me the hard disk and I can do the initial guided setup and file updates to it if that helps any.

If the time taken to initiate the update to the time it finished is less than 5 seconds then it hasn't worked. I believe you mentioned it just gives a brief flash and then returns to the main screen.
Last night I had to install a hard disk and I purposely monitored the time taken for discussion in this thread. Even on a 512K ADSL connection it took about 10 seconds and the network traffic light on the PC showed plenty of activity.
If you cannot even make a PC running the installer CD to get a successful update then it is suggesting more a network/router or ISP issue than anything else.

From memory the installer version number is displayed in the border at the top of the screen.
You won't see it increment, but take a note of it before the update and look again after.

Just got this email from Exetel, do you think it will make any difference to the tivo? If I can't get this thing to work in the next week or so, I'm going to have to give up and sell it :(
Please find that the ADSL service that is active on the number 0352457***, was yesterday migrated to the new Melbourne POP. A notification was due to be sent prior to the change but due to an administrative error the notice failed to send to all customers.
The only difference to your service is that the dedicated IP address that your account was assigned (was a 220.233.*.* IP) will be changed to the new pool of IP addresses assigned to the Melbourne POP (these are a 58.96.*.* IP range.)
Changes you will need to make:
For most of you there will be no need to make any changes to your service. If your modem is set to a dynamic IP address then the Exetel authentication server will just assign you the new IP address and your service will continue to work.
For customers who have a static IP address set in their modem / router, they will need to update this to the new IP address which can be seen in your user facilities.
The change effects residential grade services only.
If you have any further questions please reply to this email and a support staff member will assist you.
Exetel apologises for any inconvenience caused.

This notice only means they have changed the IP address that the ISP assigns to your ADSL service. Given you have made a post today means you have been changed over and your router has picked up this new IP address. No I don't believe it will make one iota of difference and you can confirm by telling us whether the TiVo has done anything different today compared to what it has been doing previously.
So what is your status? You have been a little quiet recently. I assume you have used this time to organise your local friend to help you out narrowing down where the exact problem may be. If you can let us know the outcome of this that will help.
Shame you may be considering the option of selling as I doubt you are the only Exetel person using a TiVo and strongly believe it is something local rather than the ISP at fault. To be clear, before the topic went off on a tangent of the image update via network you were at the point of post #63 (page 7) of testing or even post #76 (page 8) where you were going to take it to another place for testing there. Might be a good idea to pick it up from this point and continue if you have not already done so.

Things have been a bit quiet lately because to be honest, Im pretty over it all. I've spent a good number of hours on this thing to get nothing in return. I will get motivated again, but its just frustrating me too much at the moment.
I do also agree that it must be either the router or my network setup, but Im having trouble finding someone who has broadband and has the time to help me with it. Would be really handy if someone near geelong would be willing for me to bring it over one night or weekend to have a try on their network/ISP. Anyone from here available?

There is another test I would like to try.
This uses your PC, not the TiVo.
Download WinPcap_4_0_1.exe (http://www.winpcap.org/install/bin/WinPcap_4_0_1.exe) to any location and install it.
Then download tracetcp-0.99.4beta.zip (http://optusnet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/tracetcp/tracetcp-0.99.4beta.zip) to any location and then unzip it into your root directory (c:\).
Open a command prompt and make sure you are in the root directory (cd \), then run the following commands.
C:\tracetcp ftp.monash.edu.au:ftp
C:\tracetcp ftp.monash.edu.au:http
You will get a number of lines displayed over a period time after each command. Once complete copy all the outputs and post them here.

There are currently three people having issues connecting.
Gley had the same trouble, he ran the test today (http://forums.oztivo.net/showpost.php?p=11300&postcount=8) and found a proxy.
don't know why you can't connect, wireless shouldn't make any difference.

Possibly an over restrictive firewall or something screwy in the router. This is possibly why the CD updater don't work. Very strange that even a trace command fails but then again if someone has enabled a "belts and braces" restriction somewhere then anything is possible.
Sam: Temporarily disable any firewalls and port restriction settings on both your PC and the router and try again.

yep - thats what I orriginally thought was the problem waaay back when I first couldn't get the Tivo to call home. I thought I did remove all firewalls and blocks on the router/PC, but with my lack of knowledge - probably didn't. Does anyone have a basic guide as to how to do this? I understand I will have to log onto my router via its web based interface and turn them all off there, but how do I do the other parts? Plus should I be doing this on my router or my modem? Thanks,

It's strange. For GS the TiVo only need port 80 and port 37 open. At this stage it is port 80 we are concerned with. Port 80 is the standard port used for http (web surfing) so this port is never closed on any browser.
Are you running XP w/SP2?
