infrared problem with Austar ADB Omega

Hi
I'm a newbie (my son-in law gave me a TiVo box).I'm in maintainance mode, and all went swimmingly until the IR setup.
The problem:
Testing the IR using code 30016 in slow mode.
On pressing the Ch+ and CH- button
1. the remote resonse light on the satellite box flashes.
2. the satellite box readout changes to the correct channel, but the screen does not change.
3. The satellite box readout reverts to it's original setting.

Just to make it cofusing, sometimes the thing works, and the channels will change as expected. It can work properly for a number of channel changes, but then drops back to the above condition.
Have tried "tenting" to avoid extraneous IR, etc. to no avail.
Can anyone help?

I told you I was a newbie
Have now realised that digital austar needs a three number code input to change channels.
The IR works beautifully in fast mode providing it is generationg a 3 digit code.
