Can anyone suggest a source of 5400rpm drives? Only seem able to find 7200rpm models. How big an issue is it to use the 5400 one?

It is not important to use 5400 RPM hard disks. Most people use 7200RPM these days.

PS: thread moved to Hardware Upgrades/Mods as this is not a NZ specific topic.

Also please read this (http://minnie.tuhs.org/twiki/bin/view/FAQ/BeginnersFAQ#What_type_of_Harddisk_HDD_should) FAQ for other issues, like Seagate 7200.9's

I'm going to be getting a new drive, does anyone have a Seagate 7200.10? My local supplier has 320GB drives pretty reasonably priced... Nice and quiet still?

I dont have a 7200.10, but from all reports thry are a very quiet drive, with a good warranty.

The only downside with both the 7200.9's and 7200.10's is that you can't use two of them together in a TiVo.

320GB Seagates are fine, but as Peter has pointed out there is some text relating to the use of 7200.9 and 7200.10 versions. But if you are only using ONE drive there is no problem.

Hmmm well I'm not sure there's enough channels in NZ to warrant having 2 drives at this point anyway plus I'm going to use my Tivo as a replacement for MySky but keep the MySky to record conflicts and things I don't care about too much... if it'll even do that much for me!

I run a couple of segate 200's ~ 400GB and that does the trick nicely.

I saw this post and was interested in how you will connect the tivo, are you going to use two decoders... I don't think anyone has tried to control mysky with a tivo box.

If this was your intention then it'd be a first so capturing of the IR codes would be required.

I read somewhere it's a problem with Seagate's 9 series onwards, there's difficulty in running 2 drives with them. I guess your Seagates are version 7 or 8?

Well now there's an interesting question. Someone on the NZ forums has done it I think, I'm not really sure on how to capture the IR codes either but I'll give it a go and if it doesn't work I'll "downgrade" from MySky to a standard decoder.

Yes, my drives are .7 - generally I've found that space to be about right.

Good on ya for giving it a go. If it works it'll be good to contribute the codes back to the community.
